Beat the Heat: The Ultimate June Watering Guide for Your Garden
Ah, June! The sun is shining, the days are at their longest, and your garden is bursting into full bloom. But as the temperature climbs, your plants start getting thirsty—and watering in June isn’t quite as simple as just turning on the hose.
Water too little, and your plants will scorch; water too much, and you risk drowning them. To help you keep your garden lush, vibrant, and hydrated all summer long, we’ve put together our top expert tips for June watering.
1. Timing is Everything: Morning vs. Evening
When it comes to watering, when you do it is just as important as how much.
- The Golden Hour (Early Morning): This is the absolute best time to water. The air is cool, the water sinks deep into the soil without evaporating, and plants have a nice reservoir to draw from during the heat of the day.
- The Backup Plan (Late Evening): If you aren't a morning person, evening is your next best bet. However, be careful not to splash the leaves too much - damp leaves sitting in cool night air can invite fungal diseases like powdery mildew.
- The No-Go Zone (Midday): Avoid watering in the blazing midday sun. Not only does the water evaporate before the roots can drink it, but water droplets on leaves can act like tiny magnifying glasses, scorching your plants.
2. Water the Soil, Not the Leaves
It’s a common mistake to give plants a general "shower" from above. But plants drink from their roots, not their leaves!
Aim your hose or watering can at the base of the plant. This ensures the water goes exactly where it’s needed and keeps the foliage dry, reducing the risk of pests and diseases.
3. The June Watering Cheat Sheet
Not all plants are created equal. Here is a quick breakdown of who needs what this month:
Plant Type |
Watering Frequency |
Best Approach |
| Potted Plants & Baskets | Every day (Sometimes twice on scorching days!) | Water until it runs out the bottom holes to ensure the whole root ball is wet. |
| Vegetable Beds | Every 2–3 days | Focus heavily on tomatoes, cucumbers, and courgettes - they are mostly water and get very stressed if dry. |
| Established Shrubs & Perennials | Once a week | Give them a long, deep soak rather than a frequent splash. |
| The Lawn | Only during prolonged drought | Let it grow a bit longer to shade its own roots. If it goes brown, don't panic - it will bounce back! |
Pro-Tip: Before you water, use the 'Finger Test'. Push your finger about two inches into the soil. If it feels dry and dusty, it’s time to water. If it’s still damp, leave it for another day.
4. Work Smarter, Not Harder: Mulch!
Want to cut your watering time in half? Mulch is your best friend.
Adding a 2- to 3-inch layer of organic matter (like bark chippings or well-rotted manure) around your plants acts like a blanket. It traps moisture in the soil, keeps the roots cool, and suppresses weeds that would otherwise steal your plants' water.
Pop into our garden centre this week to grab a few bags of our premium mulch - your hose-wielding arms will thank you later!
5. Don't Forget the Wildlife
While you're keeping your plants hydrated, remember our furry and feathered garden friends! June can be a tough month for wildlife to find fresh water.
- Top up your birdbaths daily.
- Leave a shallow saucer of water on the ground for hedgehogs.
- Pop a few pebbles into a shallow dish of water so bees and butterflies can land safely and take a drink without drowning.
