Give Your Lawn the Care It Needs This Autumn
Share
After a brutal year of hosepipe bans, relentless hot weather and weeks of dry conditions, it’s no surprise that many lawns are looking tired, thin and patchy.
The good news is that autumn is one of the best times to repair your lawn. The weather is beginning to cool, rainfall is returning and the ground is still holding plenty of warmth from summer. These conditions create the ideal environment for grass seed to germinate and establish strong, healthy roots before winter.
Now is the perfect time to repair bare patches, thicken thin areas and give your lawn a fresh start for next spring.
How to repair your lawn
1. Rake the lawn thoroughly
Begin by removing dead grass, moss, leaves and other debris. Raking also helps lift the grass and opens up the surface, allowing air, water and seed to reach the soil more easily.

2. Prepare the bare areas
For heavily worn or completely bare patches, loosen the surface of the soil with a rake. This creates a fine, open seedbed and improves contact between the seed and the soil.
3. Overseed thin and damaged areas
Spread grass seed evenly over patchy or sparse sections of the lawn. Overseeding helps fill gaps, improve the lawn’s density and create a more consistent green appearance.

4. Cover with a light layer of topsoil
Once the seed has been applied, gently rake it into the surface and cover it with a thin layer of good-quality topsoil. This helps protect the seed from birds and drying out, while also helping to retain moisture. Be careful not to bury the seed too deeply, as it still needs light and air to germinate.
5. Water gently and regularly
Keep newly seeded areas lightly moist while the seed germinates. Avoid heavy watering that could wash the seed away, and try to keep foot traffic to a minimum until the new grass is well established.

Why overseeding is worth doing
Overseeding is a simple and cost-effective way to improve the look and health of your lawn. It can help repair damage caused by heat, drought and heavy use, while creating a thicker surface that is better able to withstand future wear. A dense lawn can also help reduce the opportunity for weeds and moss to take hold.
