February in the Garden: The Great Awakening (Sort of)
February is the ultimate ‘bridge’ month. One day it’s a frosty Winter wonderland, and the next, a stray sunbeam convinces you that Spring is already here. While it might still feel a bit bleak out there, this is the month where the real magic happens behind the scenes.
If you’re itching to get your hands dirty, here is your essential checklist for February.
1. The ‘Hard Graft’ (Maintenance)
Before the flowers take centre stage, there’s some housekeeping to do. Your future self will thank you for doing the heavy lifting now.
- Prep your beds: If the soil isn't frozen solid or a swamp, dig in some well-rotted manure or compost. It’s like giving your garden a high-protein breakfast.
- Stay off the grass: If it’s waterlogged or frosty, keep off the lawn. Walking on frozen grass snaps the blades, and walking on wet soil compacts it, killing the roots.
- Clean your tools: Give your secateurs and shears a good sharpen and oil. Rusty tools make for messy cuts (and grumpy gardeners).
2. Pruning & Shaping
February is the ‘last call’ for pruning many dormant plants before the sap starts rising.
- Roses: Now is the time to prune bush roses. Cut back to an outward-facing bud to keep the centre of the plant open for airflow.
- Clematis: Group 3 Clematis (the ones that flower in late summer) can be cut back hard to about 30cm above the ground. It feels scary, but they’ll love you for it.
- Wisteria: Cut back those long, whippy side shoots to two or three buds.
3. The Vegetable Patch
You don’t need a field to start growing your own dinner.
- Chit your potatoes: Pop your seed potatoes into egg cartons and leave them in a cool, bright, frost-free spot. You're looking for sturdy little green sprouts.
- Sow under cover: If you have a greenhouse or a sunny windowsill, you can start sowing leeks, onions, and hardy salads.
- Plant Garlic and Shallots: If the ground is workable, get these in now. They need a bit of a cold snap to develop properly.
Pro-Tip: If you're sowing Sweet Peas this month, use long ’root trainers’ or empty toilet roll tubes. They hate having their roots disturbed when you move them later!
4. Supporting the Locals
The birds are starting to scout for nesting sites and their natural food sources are at an all-time low.
- Keep the feeders full: High-energy fats and sunflower hearts are life-savers right now.
- Fresh water: Check that your birdbath hasn't frozen over. A simple tennis ball floating in the water can help prevent it from freezing solid.
5. Instant Colour
If you can't wait for the daffodils, come see us at the centre! You can currently plant out:
- Potted bulbs: Tête-à-Tête daffodils and crocuses for instant cheer.
- Primroses and Hellebores: These tough cookies don't mind the February chill and will brighten up any doorstep.
